Mic Black - Round 1, 2017 Champion

Building a strong future through digital creativity

Based on the Sunshine Coast, Mic Black uses digital technologies in creative ways to engage and inspire young people to make their mark.

Mic's community efforts started in 2015 with his interactive digital art project, Pixel Mosaic. The project provides an opportunity for self-discovery and learning by combining art, familiar digital technology devices, and social awareness. Using an app, participants explore the question ‘If you were to describe yourself as a sequence of colours, which colours would you choose?’. The chosen colours are programed into hundreds of small LED lights that form a physical art installation. The activity engages people of all ages in digital technologies and how they work.

Mic’s passion for using digital technology to inspire great things has grown, and since 2015 he has participated in a broad range of community activities. His current and planned future community activities include:

  • participating in a regional roadshow to create awareness of digital tech to inspire more thoughtful uses of technology and extend digital literacy in regional Australia
  • organising, coaching and promoting programs such as Startup Weekends, LevelUp Mentoring, Big Day In, Mayors Telstra Technology Awards, Coding from Beach Meetup, Silicon Coast, GovHack, Hackfest, AngelHack and more
  • contributing as Expert Advisor to the University of the Sunshine Coast Creative Industries
  • working as an ambassador for the Horizon Arts Festival
  • speaking for TEDx
  • volunteering as a Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance board member.

Mic remains focussed on creative, future thinking and has founded Mic’s Lab, a software and hardware Internet of Things research and development lab, focusing on accessibility and exploration of electronics, coding and the arts. He plans to travel to regional areas and abroad to share his passion and excitement.
